Surgery went great. It’s a long recovery as I’m still not back to normal at 4.5 months. My TMJ pain due to clicking and popping has largely been resolved. My face is still a bit stiff from surgery and scar tissue but it’s slowly getting better.
I highly recommend surgery if you have functional issues.
Hi Ryan. My wife (32 yrs old) has been going through similar issues that you had leading up to your surgery. We have been to the top surgeons in the country and just returned from a trip back from Santa Barbara to meet with Gunson. He recommended a similar surgery to what you described as having above. Can I ask how things have been for you now that you are ~3 years or so out? Any update would be wonderful to hear. Thanks.
I have the same issue as you! I am going for my third round of ortho with probably surgery as well. So far I have spent 7 years of my life with braces and have been gifted a bunch of facial soreness on a daily basis from the experience. My biggest fear is permanent numbness. I’m 33 and I really like the feeling in my bottom lip :). I’m wondering how your recovery course went and how you feel about everything now?
Surgery went really well. It sucks but you get through it. I couldn’t recommend it enough. Numbness is hardly an issue for me. I just have slight residual numbness where my lower lip is 10% numb. Non issue.
Who did you end up going to. I recently met with Dr. Wolford, but am hesitant about getting the total joint replacement surgery, as it’s very invasive. I’m considering other options and would love your input!
I ended up going with Dr Gunson in Santa Barbara, CA. I didn’t get a jaw replacement. I did have upper and lower jaw surgery, which is still very invasive but I’d do it again in a heartbeat. Happy to answer any other questions.
How did the surgery go? Any regrets?
How long were you out of work for?? I’m considering doing it for the pain I have and cross/under bite.

Did you meet with Wolford at all? If so, what you go with Gunson instead?
